The Village Green School House

Open House

September 20, 2009 - from 1pm to 4pm

The Village Green School House was open to the public again on September20,2009

as part of an ongoing program of public acess to a great piece of Aston History

Aston Township Historical Society is hosting this free community event. The Village Green School House, is owned and preserved by Aston Township. It is located on Pennell Road, just north of the Five Points intersection (Rt 452). Built about 1867, it is a vestige of the one-room schoolhouse of the past.It was used until the late 1940’s.

Many local residents have fond memories of attending this school.

The ground for the school was sold by Samuel Hewes to Jacob Richards, William Pennell and Thomas Dutton for thirty dollars. Before public schools were established in 1836, this was a private school for the families of the subscribers who made donations to build the school building. According to the original deed, it can never be sold.

Tee Shirts with the schoolhouse on it will be available for sale.

Aston Township Historical Society

Holds Open House at School House

The Aston Township Historical Society held the second of serveral scheduled open houses at the old  Village Green School house on Sunday, July 12,2009. While attendance was on the light side, it was nevertheless a very enjoyable day for those who stopped by to check out the restored schoolhouse.Don Sweigart, who attended school here in 1936-1938, visited his former school during  the June, 2009 open house, and is pictured above standing by a picture of one of the classes that attended school at the Village Green School House. He was very gracious and spoke at length about his time at the school.

The other picture on the right is his class picture. In the future we hope to have more from Don on his attending school here.
